The original story of the little mermaid is that she must kill the prince in order to be human, and in the end, she loves him too much and kills herself instead.

That synopsis of the story is lacking. She actually makes a deal similar to the one in the film. The witch cuts off her tongue, (so she cannot speak), and each step she takes feels excruciatingly painful, as if she is walking on knives. She must get the prince to fall in love with and marry her or else she will die. When the prince marries another princess the little mermaid’s sisters make a deal with the sea witch to save her life. They give the witch their hair and give the little mermaid a dagger to kill the prince. His blood will turn her legs back into a fish tail. However she refuses to do so because she loves him. In the end she throws herself into the ocean and is lifted up to the heavens by the daughters of the air . In a strange way she does achieve her goal of being loved by the prince. He is quite sad when he discovers that she is missing, as he loved her like a sister. Because of his love she receives a chance to gain an immortal soul. Something that mermaids do not have.
